Monday, Monday…Can’t Trust That Day

13 02 2012

That was just the first thing that popped into my head as I was trying to decide on a title for this post. Welcome to another Monday, handy homeowners!

Now I feel like the host of a children’s show.

Ahem.

So today left me feeling rather victorious in that I FINALLY got my upstairs toilet working. I’d tried my funky method of unclogging a toilet for a couple of days, with no success.  I was really starting to feel like I might have to call a plumber, but I just didn’t want to. So instead, I’d wait for the water to drain, flush it, plunge like a mad woman, and hope for the best.

And finally, that just worked today. Hallelujah!

Of course, I’m now having a problem with the downstairs toilet running, although that seems to have resolved itself this afternoon as well. Let’s hope that’s the end of my plumbing issues for a WHILE. I still have to install that bathroom faucet though…

But I promised myself, no big projects until after I return from all my travel. It just gets me into too much trouble!

Today was also a big day in our house – Oliver James went to an interview at Camp Bow Wow. They’re a day camp for dogs, as well as a boarding facility.  Since I’ve got a bunch of travel coming up, Ollie and Barney will have to spend a little time away from me. I found this place online, it’s not too far from my house, and I really like the idea that a) they “interview” the dogs to make sure that they play well together and b) I can watch my pups on a web cam whenever I want! That gives me a lot of confidence.

I was a wee bit nervous that Ollie might be too rambunctious for this place, but it turned out to be just perfect for him. He ran around for about four and a half hours with other dogs, and made a new friend named Sam, who is a border collie. Now that he’s home, he’s been conked out on the floor for almost two hours! It’s gotten me thinking that he might be getting some day camp time during the week when I’m working.

Barney has to wait until next week because he only got his kennel cough vaccine today, so that’s our next hurdle. He’s an excellently behaved dog, but he is nervous around dogs he doesn’t know, so I’m hoping it all goes well. I’ve signed Ollie up to go with him, so he’ll know someone (that helps his mommy too!), so he should be fine, and maybe it will even draw him out of his shell a little!

Plus, I’m pretty excited that it gives me a few hours to pack up the car in anticipation of my trip, without dogs crying because I’ve left them inside or they’re anticipating a road trip!  It’s the little things…

Tonight’s plan is to do my regularly scheduled cleaning of the kitchen (I’ve been bad lately about doing a little cleaning every day, and end up having to do it all at once, so I’m trying to get back into my routine) and some decluttering. I spent about an hour last night scanning in old receipts – it seems to work best if I can do that at night, because then the software has time to process all of the pieces, and I can sort them electronically the next day. Slowly, but surely, I’m going paperless and de-cluttering.

I should really start on the closet tonight….maybe I’ll post before and after pictures of that!

This Week on Pinterest!

12 02 2012

After a lovely weekend with my friend, Maura, I’m back! We had dinner out on Friday night, she got me hooked on Downton Abbey (I’m through series one, can’t wait to start series two!), and Saturday was spent shopping, cooking, eating, catching up and watching Old School and Downton Abbey.  We realized this morning that we’ve known each other for about 18 years! which is more than half our lives – friends like that are great to have!

And now, here I am with my favorite pins from last week!

This is from a Pinterest project I’m working on – a cool idea from a fellow contributor over at Opinionehted.com.  She posted this picture of her bedroom, created a collaborative pinboard, and invited several of us to pin ideas for what to do with the room there – very, very cool idea!

This was one of my suggestions for the bedding – I’m a fan of sticking with all white bedding (so that you can do whatever you want with wall color/etc.) and either using accent pillows and throws in bold colors, or using all white, but involving different textures, as above.

Source: houzz.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

I also suggested using a statement piece over the bed, though not necessarily this mirror. Also, don’t you just love this wall color??

I like a good funky lampshade too – these ones that I found with postcard writing in them are just beautiful. It depends on the mood you’re going for in the room though; something like this might be too romantic for your sweetie!

Source: etsy.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

Creating an accent wall is also a good option.. This pin links to the etsy shop where this girl sells these Chevron stripes.  I haven’t incorporated them into my house anywhere yet, but I think they can be funky.

Moving on…here are some beautiful doors I saw!

Source: google.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

And although I don’t love yellow, I just adore this tub.  I admit that tubs like this aren’t great for tall people like me, but don’t they look pretty??

A lovely picture of Daniel!

And my favorite picture of Daniel of all time – with Dame Judy Dench!

I didn’t even know farmhouse sinks came in other colors. Isn’t this gorgeous??

And finally, a little painting humor for you. This just cracked me up!

So what projects is everyone working on this week? I am happy to say that my house is clean, I put the dishwasher on and the towels in the wash after dropping Maura off at the bus station, and they’re just about done, so the house is in nice shape to start the week.  I am dealing with a clogged toilet again, so that’s less than exciting, and I’m starting to get ready for a big trip I’m taking in ten days, so I’ll be focusing more on some de-cluttering around here.

For one, my bedroom closet is getting totally out of control.  I almost got hit in the head with a falling boot this morning. That will definitely need some attention, pronto! And I foresee some additional scanning and shredding coming up (although I am starting to need a new recycling can – with the recycling being picked up only every two weeks here, it’s a bit difficult to keep it all under control!). So lots to do, and less time to do it in!

A Clean House and Some Recommendations

10 02 2012

My house is finally clean!

The stack of papers I had scheduled to scan and shred this week are scanned and shredded. The laundry (including all the guest bedding, all the dog bedding, and all the dog toys!) is finished! Carpets and floors are vacuumed and steam cleaned. Fabrics are febreezed. Piles have been gone through and put away. Clothes have been donated (though that’s also still a work in progress – I haven’t touched the closet yet!).

Whew. I’m exhausted.

Particularly since I’ve been working full-time and it’s been a busy work-week too, so all of this has been post-work. I need a nap.

But although I don’t always love the process of cleaning (I did try to make it more fun by blasting some music this time), I do love the feeling of sitting down on the couch with a clean home around me.

Let’s see how long it lasts before my pups wreak their messy havoc around them. I may be responsible for the piles of stuff, but this week has had more than it’s share of muddy footprints, dried drool, toy stuffing strewn everywhere, and stinky breath!

At any rate, I wanted to share with you some recommended reading tonight (er, tomorrow, since most of you are likely sleeping already!). Here are some of my favorite bloggers:

  • Between the Two – this is my mom’s blog, but I think you’ll enjoy reading her posts, which cover daily life of being married to an Englishman (my dad), and having two basset hounds, two grandchildren, and even two houses, between their main home and their future retirement home.
  • Mommy Musings – this is my sister’s blog, where she talks about her life as a stay at home mom to two adorable girls (my nieces) and wife to her cop hubby. Always a great read!
  • Lindy in the Kitchen - written by my sister’s best friend, Linda’s blog focuses on retro cooking – she’s got some fabulous recipes, and, being Italian, was raised to cook expertly!
  • The Pioneer Woman – Ree Drummond’s blog is a can’t miss. I started reading it a few years ago when a friend mentioned that she also had a basset hound (Charlie). She’s since added Walter the basset, and her blog focuses on life on a ranch in the midwest, where she raises and homeschools her four kids, and in the past couple of years, has developed and written two cookbooks, a children’s book, a biography of her love story with her husband, and filmed her Food Network cooking show. She is truly hilarious.
  • Organized Home – want to get organized? The Organized Home has some great tips. And subscribing will constantly make you feel guilty remind you to get to work on your own home!
  • The Lettered Cottage – Layla and Kevin make me want to be a better home decorator and do-it-myself-er. They have a BEAUTIFUL home that they’ve been renovating themselves, in a very modern/country/Pottery Barn-esque way.  It’s truly fabulous, and they have some great how-to’s in there as well as before and after’s of their home (and others).  They’ve just finished wrapping the pilot for their very own HGTV show, and I can’t wait to see it!
  • tumbledweeds – written by a friend of mine from college, this is one of the most beautiful blogs I read. She writes about the journey of motherhood from a Christian perspective (I’ll note that while I’m fairly spiritual, I’m not particularly religious, but I just love her posts), and she gets you thinking and reminds you to have grace and find beauty in your life. It’s one of those blogs that when I see she has a new post, I stop whatever I’m doing to read it.
  • Brocante Home – Alison May’s blog focuses on vintage housekeeping. It’s a favorite of my mom’s, who got me hooked on reading it. Not everything in here is for me, but she is funny and quirky, and her guides on de-cluttering, housekeeping, and more are some of the best I’ve seen.

So that’s my recommended reading for this week – make sure to subscribe to these blogs in your readers (or “follow” them if you’re a Blogger user – my mom is constantly looking to grow her followers!). I will try to post my Pinterest pins from this week (I have so many great Daniel Craig pictures to choose from!), but I have a good friend from high school arriving tomorrow (hence the whirlwind cleanse) and you may just see me on Sunday night instead!

Oops, I did it Again

7 02 2012

Despite my best intentions, I didn’t get around to taking shots of my painted closet today! Tomorrow instead!

I was tired tonight, but I have big plans for cleaning the house this week after work because I have a friend visiting this weekend. After using my panini maker for the first time (yum – cheese and ham, toasted, FTW), I futzed around in the kitchen for a bit, wiping counters and straightening up. I managed to motivate myself enough to clean out the fridge and freezer, and I’m embarrassed to say there was more than one expired item in there.

But that was some positive de-cluttering for the night, which made me realize that I can incorporate it into my nightly routine (when I stick to it, which hasn’t been very much lately!).  The kitchen is now spotless (minus the floor, but with the dogs, I like to wait as long as possible to get that clean!). I also dusted the rest of the first floor, cleaning up spots of Barney-drool as I went – gross, but a fact of life with some bassets.

I also used my new vacuum, with a fancy pet attachment that it came with, to clean the couch. I’d left the cover off all week, so it had gotten a bit of hair on it, and the friend who’s visiting is unfortunately allergic to dogs.  She takes some allergy meds when she comes, but this will be her first visit with two dogs, so I’m trying to get it as clean as I can.  So I got as much hair as I could see off the couch and put the clean slip cover back on – I also plan to wash it again towards the end of the week.

I vacuumed the two chairs in the room – the pups never used to sit on them, but Barney has taken to sitting in the one in the corner, because it gives him a different vantage point of the cul-de-sac for his “patrolling.” You haven’t lived until you’ve watched a basset hound growl ferociously…while he lays his head on the arm of the chair. It’s obviously very intimidating…um, not so much.

At any rate, I also did another de-cluttering job that I’ve been putting off – going through the boys’ toys.  It’s a little ridiculous how many toys they have, and it’s been a little while since I’ve washed them and thrown out the ones that Barney has ripped open.  So I did that tonight, which should also cut down a bit on the doggy-ness of the house. Unfortunately, Ollie has also managed to destroy the toy basket, one of my favorite baskets in the house, by chewing a handle off, and part of the side, so I’ll have to pick up a new one…probably a smaller one, to keep me from spoiling the pups too much!

I was also excited to hang up a map of Rome that I found – I had framed it a while ago, and then put it up in the attic because I didn’t have anywhere to hang it.  I decided a few months ago to hang postcards or prints from my travels on the wall leading up the stairs, after I found a beautiful print that looks like a pencil drawing of the Eiffel Tower, while I was in Charles de Gaulle airport. Since then, I’ve added three cards I picked up in San Francisco (also in the airport), a Christmas card one of our clients sent us for Christmas from Prague, and now the map of Rome, which we actually used while we were there – my dad’s notes are even on it. Since Rome is one of my favorite cities, it will be nice to see that every time I come up or go down the stairs. I’ll have to post a photo of that tomorrow too.

All in all, a rather productive night, surprisingly.  This is a rather mundane post, I know, but I promised to write daily, and there are a lot of mundane days for us handy homeowners! But despite it being mundane, I must say it’s nice to sit down on the couch with the washing machine going, the dishwasher loaded, and everything clean and straightened.

Chicken with an MIA Head

6 02 2012

The last two days have been a wee bit crazy. I didn’t forget to post last night, but I (for some reason) decided I would start painting my closet at 5pm.  I thought it wouldn’t take too long because I was being reasonable, I thought, and not attempting both closets.

Fast forward to 2am.

Yes, seriously. That’s when I finished up – I had one closet done, two walls of trim, and one window trim.  Also, the wall paint touchups that I’ve been meaning to do FOREVER.

So it was some good work, but man, was I tired.  And my whole body is sore today – I mean, that was a solid nine hours of painting, moving furniture and closet doors, etc.

I promise to post pictures tomorrow. I planned to take them today, but the day got away from me.

I slept late (mercifully, my pups have been super lazy on weekend mornings like their mama!) had some breakfast and coffee, FaceTimed with my parents and niece, and then got distracted by scanning, filing and shredding some files.

In between, I managed to color my hair, start some laundry, and think that somehow I would be able to run over to my parents’ to throw in some laundry (they have the big washer, I have the little stackable – not great for comforters!), run to the grocery store, run to Walmart (since my Giants tee shirt has gone missing), and still have time to make and decorate football-themed cupcakes.

I thought I’d put off the room pictures until tomorrow, because I’d be taking cupcake pictures.

But no.

I fortunately came to my senses and instead picked up a superbowl-themed cake at the supermarket. Much more sensible.

Then I raced home, fed the dogs early so that we’d have time for them to go out before I left, and took them on a very brisk walk – poor Barney was excited because normally I’m not so anxious and crazy unless we’re leaving the house to drive up to my parents’, so he was happy to get his leash on and go out the door…until he realized we weren’t getting in the car.

I also managed to get out a ton of recycling and some garbage for tomorrow’s pickup, all before heading out for a superbowl party up the street that I had been invited to.  It was a lot of fun (great game!) and no matter which side you cheered for, you can be happy with me because while I was wearing a Giants tee shirt, I was also wearing my Tom Brady jersey. Yes, I’m a fan of both teams (and the Jets, in fact), and this superbowl, I just couldn’t decide who to root for.

We subsequently ate WAY too much food – starting with veggies and dip, followed by pulled pork sliders, made by my next door neighbor (YUM), followed by big soft pretzels (also YUM), followed by dirty water hot dogs, which had cheese in them, followed by cake.

I won’t need to eat for a week.

So there was handy homeowner-ing this weekend, just not the time for sharing it! I hope to get some painting done at night this week too – I have a friend coming next weekend, and I like to have the house looking good! – and some more de-cluttering. You’ll be happy to know that I went through a set of little drawers I have, and the (mostly empty) closet that I painted, so those are fully de-cluttered!

Now I’m rambling, so it’s time to sign off! Until tomorrow…

This Week on Pinterest!

3 02 2012

Okay, so you’ll have to bear with me this week because I have a LOT of pins. I just found a lot of good things worth sharing this week!

Isn’t this beautiful?? It’s a bookstore in Paris. I just love it.

I couldn’t resist this little face!

Did you see the Glee engagement? This part was so sad, but I know how she feels!

This is apparently a great way to clean the stove grates – I’m always trying to get these clean, so I’m going to try it out!

Doesn’t this salad look gorgeous? I love a good salad!

I get choked up every time I read this – from Harry Potter. A great tat for someday, though probably not on the back of my neck!

Oh, how I wish my garden looked like this!

It arrived today!! I had a cup of coffee after dinner!! Prepare for over-caffeinated posts!! :)

Source: keurig.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

This is such a beautiful backyard. I don’t love the columns and the chandelier (or the chairs and table for that matter), but I love an outdoor fireplace, and the pergola, and all the plants!

I’m just going to have to do this with one of my sweaters. I do have red felt lying around….

I chuckle every time I read this. I mean, seriously, if I woke up and Channing Tatum said we were married? Okay, great!

Source: facebook.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

I just love doorways. I pinned a bunch this week, and love to photograph them myself as well!

If you haven’t watched Kristen Bell talk about her boyfriend bringing her a sloth for her birthday (just to visit, not to stay), you MUST watch this. It is hilarious, and even though I’ve been a big Kristen Bell fan for a while, I love her a little more after this!

What a great idea! Though I’d have to find some other kind of can to use since I don’t eat tuna…

And your weekly Daniel picture! Can’t wait for Skyfall to come out!!

This is a great app for us handy homeowners – it allows you to save your measurements in the house to your iPhone or iPad.  I haven’t downloaded it yet, but I will be!

Although it would be totally impractical for me (my dogs are short, but they’re not THAT short, and they only have so much willpower when it comes to not snagging things off the coffee table), I just love this idea.

True story.

I also love this. Can you sense a theme? I mean, how can you not love the “underground” drawer pulls! Ack!

I should try this idea too – I put the pot lids in my new hutch, and it’s fine for now, since I don’t use many lids, but it takes up a lot of space, and it’s a hassle.

A Doggy Mom

2 02 2012

In addition to being a handy homeowner girl, I’m also a doggy mom to two basset hound puppies.

Handsome, aren't they?

Barney is a 66-pound three-year-old lap dog, who is happiest when he can sit on the couch and “patrol” the neighborhood…a job he takes VERY seriously.

Oliver is a bouncing puppy at 8 1/2 months and 45 pounds, who, as my mom says is “full of beans” – thus his nickname of “beaner.” He is definitely the crazy, barky, needy one in the house (Barney is more quietly desperate for cuddles), but despite this, Barney is the destroyer of toys.

We’ve got through many a toy here in the last three years, as Barney determinedly rips them to shreds, leaving lonely balls of stuffing in his wake and a little felt ear here and there.

I’m just grateful that they’re not real animals.

But because of this, I’m very careful about Ollie’s “baby.” When I first brought him home, my mom had bought him a little stuffed puppy at the store for his very own (since we already had an unimaginably huge pile of dog toys here).  It stays in his crate with him, and is his first toy. He loves it.

And Barney is determined to “kill” this thing.  He regularly sneaks into Ollie’s crate (usually when I’m on the phone for work), pulls the baby out, and tries to rip it to shreds.

Usually, I catch him before it gets serious. But twice in the last week, we’ve had some severe casualties.  Last week, he tore open the back and almost pulled off it’s tail. I sewed it back together just in time for the pup’s bedtime.

Then yesterday, he ripped its head open.

Oooh.

Ollie was not happy, so, like a kid’s mom, I promised to fix the puppy.  Fortunately, when you’re fixing a dog toy, you can go with function over aesthetics, and I didn’t have to make it look pretty – just seal it up!

All better!

The pups were both worried about what I was doing as I sewed him up, but the little guy was pretty happy to get his “baby” back. I’m currently guarding it on the couch while he climbs headfirst into the basket of toys that Barney tipped over.

You can really see the head damage here, as well as the seam up the back!

So now we’ll have to see how long the baby lasts! He definitely needs a little trip through the washing machine, along with Ollie’s bedding, so hopefully I did a good enough job of stitching him up.

And, lest you worry I have an angry basset hound on my hands, Barney is actually the sweetest dog I’ve ever met. He really is a lover, not a fighter, despite his destruction of toys!

My snuggler

Air Miles to the Rescue!

1 02 2012

Ever since my parents got me a set of espresso mugs for Christmas, I’ve really wanted to get a Keurig. They have a Tassimo, which is just lovely, and we’d bought one for my sister for her 25th birthday too (she subsequently drank about three cups of coffee in an hour and was texting me in hyperspeed, but that’s a story for another time). I had wanted a Tassimo too, but then Starbucks decided to move their coffees over to Keurig.

And I love me some Starbucks.

I’m not a fan of the “making coffee in a coffee pot” thing, mostly because it never seems to taste the way I want it to. So I pretty much only have coffee if I go out to Starbucks.

And yes, I know a Keurig isn’t crazy expensive (particularly in the world of coffee makers), but I just can’t justify the $100 right now.

Enter air miles, of all things.

I got a little flyer in the mail today from the airline that we used to use regularly for travel (I’m not going to name names because it’s an airline that I particularly despise lately and have decided to avoid flying whenever possible).  I knew I had TONS of miles, which were sitting unused, and the flyer said that I could actually use them for products…like credit card points.

Amazing.

I figured I’d check out the site a little bit, and I found plenty of lovely things on there, including the very reasonably priced (in terms of miles) Keurig starter set. I ordered it. I’m in heaven.

I also was able to order a new suitcase – mine is perfectly serviceable, but it’s pretty heavy when it has nothing in it, and with most airlines charging for extra weight, I want to cut back wherever I can (particularly when I’m off next month on a LONG trip to three different climates). I’m a little ridiculously excited.

So I’ll soon have a brand new appliance in the kitchen. I wish it was here already!  This little surprise “free” shopping trip almost makes up for the insomnia I’ve had the past two nights! (Apparently, it can be a side effect of a concussion). So a “Tip for Tuesday?” – if you’re a frequent traveler, but have no plans to use your miles to fly anywhere, check out whether you can use them for your home! They even had lovely Dyson vacuums, televisions, and plenty of tools!

This week on Pinterest

29 01 2012

Well, I spent most of the day painting the bathroom.

But you’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to see the before and after. I’m plum tuckered out, it needs a bit of time to dry, and photos always look better with daylight, even if there’s no natural light in that bathroom!

Instead, I’ll share some of my favorite pins from this week!

Isn’t this laundry room just divine? I particularly love the brick.

Source: tumblr.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

And of course, another divine thing, Mr. Daniel Craig!

I’ve made a couple of these this week – simple and pretty, and hopefully soon to appear in my Etsy shop!

Source: houzz.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

What a kitchen! Although I’m sure I’d get annoyed with the ladder being in the way after a while!

Love, love, love this! And it’s something I could eventually do myself!

Doesn’t everyone want a little secret garden in their backyard?

Source: worklols.com via Lindsay on Pinterest

I just laughed out loud at this one. It’s so, so true!

These shoes…fabulous.

How cute is this little guy??

My mom pinned this earlier this week. I love it. She said it reminds her of one of my favorite quotes – “Be alert, the world needs more lerts.”

An elephant night light? Yes please!

Yes, I pinned my new hutch. I couldn’t resist.

Although I don’t love all white rooms, I do LOVE this tub!

Here’s a shot of my pup from yesterday – I stuck it over on my photography blog.

I feel like I might need this, since I still pack like I’m going to be away for years.

You definitely have to click through to get the whole story on this one. I cried reading it – it’s so beautiful, and what a brave little boy.

Crafting – A Bonus Post

26 01 2012

And, since I missed a post on Tuesday, thanks to my migraines, I thought I’d give you a little bonus post tonight.  I wanted to share some of the crafts I was working on during December, which I couldn’t post about then, since they were all gifts!

A crocheted bracelet

This bracelet is identical to one I made for a friend, but this is the one I made for myself – I never realized I could crochet with wire until recently, and I LOVE the results.  I need to get working on some more of these, so that I can put them in my Etsy shop!

Okay, so you know I’m obsessed with Pinterest, but I don’t spend all my time just pinning potential projects – sometimes, I actually do them! I found this cowl pattern on Pinterest, and since I get a bit bored with my typical crocheting, I decided to give it a try, and love the results.  The pattern itself is a bit of a pain, but it looks so beautiful when it’s done that I made one as a gift for my sister, another as a gift for a friend, and this one for myself! This one was crocheted with my left index finger stuck in the air, because it was just after I’d injured it!

A portrait necklace

Very carefully, I used the exacto knife to create this necklace for my mom – it’s silhouettes of my sisters and I, along with her two granddaughters. It took a few tries to get the sizing right, but I was happy with the way it came out in the end, and so was my mom!

Display basset

I’ve always wanted to get my sister a British flag knit hat, and when I found a pattern to crochet one, I knew I needed to make it for her.  So I did, and used Ollie to model it!

That’s some of my recent crafting, though I’m wishing I took far more photos of the things I made this Christmas! Lately, I’m working on some more crocheted cowls for Etsy and I promise to photograph some things this weekend so that I can get them up there!
